On Friday, Union Minister of Urban Development, Manohar Lal Khattar, announced that Sarai Kale Khan Chowk in Delhi would be renamed Birsa Munda Chowk. This decision was made to honor the 150th birth anniversary of the tribal leader and freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda.
Born in 1875 in present-day Jharkhand, Munda played a significant role in resisting British colonial rule. He is remembered for mobilizing tribal communities to challenge British authorities and advocate for their rights.
Khattar explained that renaming the chowk near the ISBT bus stand would inspire both Delhi residents and visitors. The statue and the new name are intended to keep Munda’s legacy alive for future generations.
The Union Minister emphasized that this move was a tribute to Munda’s contributions to India’s independence movement. He expressed hope that it would raise awareness of Munda’s life and struggles.
Earlier on Friday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with Khattar and Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, unveiled a statue of Bhagwan Birsa Munda in the national capital. The event marked the start of celebrations for Munda’s 150th birth anniversary.
